URBAN DESIGN

Ring Utrecht
Research project on how to improve traffic congestion without damaging the historic structures along the New Dutch Waterline, a military defensework built around 1880. An in-depth traffic study revealed that instead of building a new freeway, adding underpasses to the existing roadways improved traffic congestion without any significant impact on the existing environment.

Slower speed limits improve traffic flow and intersections need much less space, which means more space for nature, cycling, water connections and saving historic structures.
A park on top of the freeway improves the relationship between the city of Utrecht and the nearby landscape.
