Fort Mason Bicycle Tunnel
The tunnel of the former San Francisco Belt Railroad that runs under Fort Mason, is unused. There are plans to extend Muni’s F-line in the future to Crissy Field. In the mean time, the tunnel could be transformed into a temporary, spectacular bike tunnel. The tunnel is a safer and faster alternative to the busy car-oriented Bay Street and the winding paths on the hills of Great Meadow Park used by many tourists and runners.
The railroad tunnel has been closed and abandoned since 1993. Though it is possible to pass by Fort Mason, tourists make the climb along the Bay hard while Bay Street is dominated by cars.
San Francisco has several goals for increasing cycling in the city. Reuse of the tunnel improves the cycling experience between the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown neighborhoods.
The proposed tunnel is an exciting experience that is faster and safer for everyone, also for the ones who don't use it.
